Two Calgary lawyers have been disbarred after a disciplinary committee found they breached their professional code of conduct by hiring a private investigator to surveil a Manitoba judge in 2021.
The Law Society of Alberta issued disbarment notices Tuesday for John Carpay and Jay Cameron, citing their failure to discharge professional duties “honourably and with integrity.”
According to a report from a Law Society hearing committee, the lawyers conspired to have a private investigator follow Manitoba Court of King’s Bench Chief Justice Glenn Joyal in a bid to catch him breaking public-health rules.

Carpay also had his investigator follow then-Manitoba premier Brian Pallister and the province’s chief medical officer of health.
