GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (KSNB) - The Central Nebraska Humane Society has reopened cat adoptions after suspending them in early August due to a serious viral outbreak .
The shelter confirmed that feline panleukopenia , also known as feline distemper, spread rapidly through its cat population. Staff said several cats entered the shelter already carrying the virus, which then spread despite quarantine and treatment efforts.
“You can have a cat go from completely healthy to in very rough conditions 24 hours later,” said Miquelle Levander with the Central Nebraska Humane Society. “We can try and treat with antibiotics and fluids, which we did, but the aggressiveness of the illness can outweigh the care we’re able to give once they present symptoms.”
