AKRON, Ohio (WJW) -- Wednesday was moving day at Akron Children's Hospital -- not for the entire hospital, but for those who may just be the most fragile and least stable of their patients.
After years of careful planning, the hospital opened a new pediatric intensive care unit on the sixth floor of its Kay Jewelers Pavilion on Wednesday, moving beds and equipment from the old unit on the fourth floor of the main hospital building.
Once everything was in place, a careful plan was carried out to move the patients, starting with a 2 1/2-month old boy who had just undergone heart surgery less than 24 hours before.
"We have spent a lot of time preparing for this, to move our patients from our current intensive care unit over to a new space," said Dr. Patty Raimer, the PICU medical director.
