MARYVILLE, Ill. (First Alert 4) - The man who was found not guilty by reason of insanity in a Maryville pastor’s murder during a church service in 2009 has been denied a request to transfer to a non-secure treatment facility.
Terry J. Sedlacek went into a Maryville church on March 8, 2009, and began firing shots. A bullet hit a Bible held by Rev. Fred Winters, causing it to spray like confetti, then another shot fatally struck him.
Members of the church subdued Sedlacek after the gun jammed. Two of the church members were stabbed by Sedlacek.
In 2015, Sedlacek was found not guilty by reason of insanity and ordered to be held at a secure mental-health facility operated by the Illinois Department of Human Services.
