A New Jersey man has been arrested and charged with vehicular homicide in connection to a crash that killed a construction worker, after a blood test revealed he had alcohol and multiple drugs in his system at the time.

Douglas Smith, 51, of Lakehurst, was arrested on Wednesday at a residence in Toms River, about a month after the construction zone crash claimed the life of 50-year-old Allen Adams, according to the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office.

Adams was operating machinery in a construction zone on Lakewood Road in the early hours of July 31 when he was allegedly struck by a vehicle driven by Smith. The machinery was equipped with flashing amber warning lights, prosecutors said.
