More than a dozen people have been killed while many others have been injured after a streetcar crashed in Portugal's busiest city.

The tram, known as a funicular, derailed on the Gloria railway line in Lisbon at about 6.15pm on Wednesday.

The funicular is a popular mode of transport for locals and tourists in the busy city, consisting of two carriages which can each carry about 40 people.

While it is unclear how many people were on the streetcar at the time of the crash, the incident has left at least 15 people dead and 18 others injured, according to Portuguese authorities.

An emergency medical service spokesperson told local media there are grave fears held for five of the injured passengers.
