Southwest Allen County Schools is estimated to lose more than $4 million in property taxes next year, and with larger losses looming, leaders are eager to begin discussions about the financial implications of Indiana's new property tax reform law.

Randi Libby, chief operating officer, shared the estimated property tax cap loss during a budget presentation this week to the school board. The anticipated $4.4 million hit – which is up from about $2 million this year – is expected to affect the operations fund cash balance.

The operations fund, which is budgeted for $37 million, generally pays for items not directly tied to instruction. This includes transportation, capital projects, district administrators, utilities and property insurance.
