CROWN POINT — A Chicago man was sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison for killing his ex-girlfriend's new boyfriend in 2023, according to court records.

Dyequan Kizer, 30, was sentenced for fatally shooting Darius Sims June 9, 2023, at an apartment in the 2500 block of Madison Street in Gary, records show.

Kizer was initially charged with murder and a firearm enhancement, but pleaded down to voluntary manslaughter in exchange for a dismissal of the murder charge and enhancement, according to a plea agreement filed in April. Voluntary manslaughter is a level two felony, which carries between 10 to 30 years in prison.
