NEW YORK —

Hurricanes wreak havoc and destruction, leaving tragedy in their wake.

There have been 32 hurricanes since 1851 that have killed 100 or more people in the U.S. and its territories. In all, these storms have caused at least 28,000 deaths.

The deadliest was the Great Galveston Hurricane of 1900, which killed a minimum of 8,000 people upon making landfall just south of Houston in Galveston, Texas. The real death count could be as high as 12,000 people, according to data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration .

Hurricane Maria happened less than a decade ago, but it has the third-highest death count. Hurricanes Katrina and Helene are the only other storms from the 2000s that make this list.
