BROWNSVILLE, Texas (ValleyCentral) — The Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department is preparing to host its free inaugural community kayak racing event this month.

The race is part of the city's effort to celebrate its waterways, foster community engagement, and uplift the creative arts.

"This isn't just a race—it's a celebration of our community and creativity!" the Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department announced.

Competitors will have the opportunity to design their own kayak and race along the resaca at no cost with other contestants.

Kayaks and life jackets will be provided by the city.

Prizes will be awarded under the following categories. • First to finish • Most creative kayak • Team spirit award
