CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (KCRG) - An immigrant rights group thinks a new federal proposal to increase punishments for people who attack ICE agents will only spread fear.
Iowa Representative Ashley Hinson and other Republican members of Congress have introduce the Protect and Respect ICE Act.
The bill would double the punishment for those arrested for assaulting or impeding a federal immigration agent.
Hinson says the bill protects those putting their lives on the line,
But, the Iowa Migrant Movement for Justice says the bill just fuels fear in the community.
“They seized on anti-immigrant feeling and anti-immigrant fear at the same time that we know deeply our immigrant communities are scared and terrified regardless of their immigration status,” said Elena Casillas Hoffman, Communications
