Colombian footballer Javier Bolivar is facing widespread criticism after slapping referee Vanessa Ceballos during a match.

The incident took place in the 66th minute when Bolivar was shown a red card while on the sidelines. As referee Ceballos raised the card, Bolivar turned and struck her across the face with his right hand.

The referee reacted angrily and tried to kick Bolivar before being restrained by other players.

Footage of the incident went viral, sparking public outrage and demands for strong disciplinary action.

Bolivar later apologized on Instagram, calling his actions “disrespectful and inappropriate.”

He denied intentionally hitting the referee, claiming he was trying to grab the whistle from her mouth.
