Over several decades, the Van Dam family has been working to build some of the most unique boats on the Great Lakes.
The company's roots stretch back to the early 1970s, after newlyweds Jean and Steve Van Dam left Michigan and honeymooned on the East Coast. The two decided they wanted to build a boat together and sail around the world. While they were visiting the East Coast, Steve found a place to learn how to build boats and they settled down there while he apprenticed for a boat builder.
Steve diligently learned his new craft, but eventually left when his ideas of artistry clashed with his teacher.
