The Order of Canada is the nation’s highest civilian honor, reflecting the values and aspirations of the country. Recipients are expected to embody the motto of the Order: "They desire a better country." However, concerns have arisen regarding Mohamad Fakih, a recent appointee, and his comments that some believe undermine these values.

On August 25, Fakih made a controversial statement on social media, saying, "On behalf of literally every Canadian of conscience: if you are a Canadian and a supporter of Israel, you do not have basic human values, let alone Canadian values." This statement has drawn criticism for its sweeping condemnation of many Canadians who support Israel, a democratic nation, or have cultural ties to it.

Critics argue that such remarks deny belonging and dignity to a significant portion of the Canadian population. The Order of Canada was established to honor individuals whose contributions uplift the entire nation, not to create divisions among citizens. When a member of the Order suggests that many Canadians lack fundamental values, it raises questions about the integrity of the honor itself.

Three former parliamentarians from diverse political backgrounds have united in their call for the revocation of Fakih’s appointment. They emphasize that his comments are incompatible with the values expected of Order members. They point out that the Order has previously revoked memberships for dishonorable conduct, fraud, or hate speech.

The current climate in Canada is marked by rising antisemitism and increasing polarization. In this context, symbols of unity are crucial. Allowing rhetoric that excludes Canadians to go unchallenged, especially from someone holding a prestigious honor, could send a harmful message about the nation’s values.

The former parliamentarians stress that revoking Fakih’s membership would not be an act of censorship. He retains the right to express his views, but accountability is essential. Membership in the Order of Canada is a privilege that comes with responsibilities.

To maintain the Order as a symbol of the values Canadians aspire to, it must be defended rigorously, especially during controversial times. The Advisory Council for the Order of Canada is being urged to conduct a formal review of Fakih’s appointment to ensure that the integrity of the Order is upheld.
