A merger between the American Federation of Teachers — West Virginia and the West Virginia Education Association officially took effect Sept. 1, creating a new statewide organization called Education West Virginia .
Union leaders say the move — approved by delegates from both groups on March 29 after nearly three years of deliberation — is designed to strengthen their collective voice and advocacy efforts for teachers, school employees and public education in the state.
