Northern Virginia public schools are back in the spotlight in a months-long fight with the U.S. Department of Education over their policies designed to protect transgender students in schools.

The Arlington, Alexandria, Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William school districts, located in the D.C. suburbs, all declined to change their supportive policies after the Education Department said the policies violate federal law. Federal funding has been threatened, lawsuits have been filed.
