The Oregonian/OregonLive covered the need to let Portland Public Schools students out early in hot weather due to the schools overheating, (“ Portland schools closed early at 72 degrees Friday as heat wave — and potentially more early dismissals — loom for next week, ” Aug. 29). The report noted the lack of a good plan going forward, as schools seem to be getting too hot for a good learning environment. There was concern over whether schools would be able to make up lost classroom time from early dismissals.

A no-cost solution is available and would be relatively easy to implement.

I remember that years ago, schools typically started in mid-September and let out in mid-June. Portland weather is often hot in late August and early September, but it is rarely hot at the beginning of June.
