The Great Lakes could see waterspout activity Thursday, Sept. 4, amid gales and high waves on the lakes, waterspout experts predict.

There is a chance of waterspouts across the Great Lakes on Sept. 4, with potential activity moving along the Michigan coastline throughout the day, according to forecasts from the International Centre for Waterspout Research.

Waterspouts tend to form when the air is cool and moist, and the water is near its warmest. The phenomena tend to form on the Great Lakes from August to October, the National Weather Service said. In late August, more than two dozen were sighted on the lakes in one "outbreak."
