ALTOONA, PA. (WTAJ) — The longest Total Lunar Eclipse is set to glimpse Earth's skies Sunday, September 7th.

What is a Total Lunar Eclipse?

Simply put, planet Earth directly blocks sunlight, with only the red and orange wavelengths bending through the atmosphere.

This causes the moon to turn red/orange.

The Blood Moon aligns with the Harvest Moon ( the first full moon of September).

Over 70% of the world will be able to view the change in color at night.

The United States will not have the opportunity to see this occur at night, because the maximum eclipse will occur at 2:11 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

However, the moon will remain bright and should be seen due to clearing skies for the second half of the weekend.
