Most of us remember before when the National Guard was activated in Washington, D.C. It was when the U.S. Capitol was attacked on Jan. 6, 2021. No question it was needed then, but Donald Trump was in no hurry ( “When the line between police and military is blurred,” Sept. 3).

Some of us were around when the National Guard was called to Baltimore once before. It was after the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. It was needed then, too, without a doubt. I remember climbing onto the roof of the townhouse I was living in at the time and seeing the smoke rising from all the fires. I also remember the armored vehicles driving through the neighborhood.

Like all cities, we have crime here — too much. But there’s a big difference between life as usual and riots. We know the difference
