Crews appear to be making progress in extinguishing a series of lightning-sparked fires as they begin to assess damage in the burn area, including the historic gold mining town of Chinese Camp.

TCU September Lightning Complex acreage, containment

Cal Fire, the state's fire management agency, grouped the series of fires into what is now called the TCU September Lightning Complex. At least 16 fires comprise the complex, which has collectively burned at least 13,371 acres as of 7:16 a.m. Thursday.

The acreage is a slight dip from the 13,766 acres reported at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Numbers can decrease when firefighters get a better handle on a fire and can improve their surveying of a burn area. But the fact that the acreage has not increased signals firefighters have been able to prevent major
