COLUMBIA, S.C. (WIS) - A former South Carolina state lawmaker has elected to represent himself in his upcoming federal trial.

RJ May appeared in federal court on Thursday for a status hearing, where his request to self-represent was granted. His trial is still scheduled to begin in October.

May, a Republican who represented the Lexington area, was indicted on 10 federal counts of distributing child sexual abuse material. He resigned from the South Carolina House of Representatives on Aug. 7, nearly two months after his arrest and suspension from the chamber.
