A shamed surgeon who claimed on TV he lost his legs to sepsis today admitted causing his own injuries after buying grotesque videos from a self-styled "Eunuch Maker".

Twisted Neil Hopper, 49, was branded Britain's bravest NHS surgeon when he appeared on the BBC and ITV to claim he fell ill on a family camping trip. But today he was jailed for 32 months after he admitted the amputations were self-inflicted and he had swindled more than £466,000 in an insurance fraud.

Truro Crown Court was told the 49-year-old, who had carried out hundreds of amputation operations, lived out a sexual fantasy by freezing his legs with dry ice while his wife and children were away. Hopper was found by a family friend and told medical staff he had suffered flu-like symptoms.
