(FOX40.COM) — Beginning in September, the Latino and Hispanic community in the United States will be nationally celebrated during Hispanic Heritage Month. From Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, people of Latin or Hispanic origin will be honored for their influence and contributions with events across the nation.

Hispanic Heritage Month began as a commemorative week in 1968 and was later turned into 31 days by former President George H. W. Bush in 1989, according to History.com.
U.S. Census data shows that the Hispanic or Latino community is the second-largest ethnic group in the capital city, meaning there is a variety of events throughout the region for the community to attend in celebration.
