Angela Rayner’s cabinet colleagues were today continuing to support the Deputy Prime Minister in the wake of the furore over her tax affairs.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson and Chancellor Rachel Reeves were at St Stephen’s CofE Primary School in Astley to champion the creation of thousands of nursery school places across the UK over the next couple of years.

But a distracting backdrop to the good news for many parents across Greater Manchester was the admission by Ms Rayner – who is also a housing minister – that she underpaid stamp duty when buying a flat in Hove.
