An Ebola outbreak has left 15 dead as dozens more were feared to be infected.

The deaths in the Democratic Republic of the Congo include four health workers.

The alarm was raised in the Bulape and Mweka health zones, with victims showing tell-tale symptoms of fever, vomiting, diarrhoea and haemorrhage.

Tests at the National Institute of Biomedical Research in Kinshasa on September 3 confirmed Ebola Zaire as the cause.

The Mirror reports that health officials have confirmed 28 suspected cases as of September 4.

In response, a national Rapid Response Team has been deployed, alongside World Health Organization (WHO) experts in epidemiology, lab work, case management and infection prevention.
