South Fayette soccer coach Nick Rosser has been entering his team in the Avonworth Tournament for the last nine years. After years of just missing out on the trophy, the Lions finally lifted the hardware on August 31.

“It was pretty nice to win the tournament, and the first trophy of the year,” Rosser said. “I didn’t think of it until the end.”

After testing themselves early on in the season with non-conference action against Class 4A side Peters Township and fellow conference powerhouse West Allegheny, the Lions won the Avonworth Tournament in style. In the opening match against Bethel Park, South Fayette picked up a 4-0 win. However, against Erie Cathedral Prep – a regular in the PIAA Tournament – the Lions edged out a 1-0 win thanks to a goal from freshman Silvanna Rossi.
