Alberta RCMP issued more than 1,660 traffic tickets over the Labour Day long weekend, nearly half of them for speeding.
According to a release issued by the Alberta RCMP on Sept. 3, 789 of those tickets were for speeding, while 34 others were for distracted driving and 19 were for failing to wear a seatbelt.
In addition, nearly 100 impaired drivers were taken off the roads, with 70 receiving Immediate Roadside Sanctions.
Sgt. Darrin Turnbull, with Alberta RCMP Traffic, noted that there were 54 collisions reported over the weekend, with four fatalities.
“Fatal motor vehicle collisions are often avoidable,” said Turnbull. " We are reminded of this every long weekend when lives are lost due to factors such as drugs, alcohol, and speeding.”
