After the New Democratic Party officially launched the race to elect its next federal leader on Sept. 2, former North Island-Powell River NDP candidate in the spring's federal election is eager to enter the competition.

Tanille Johnston, who sits as a city councillor for the City of Campbell River and is the first-ever First Nations person elected to the role, seeks to be nominated as a contestant in the 2026 NDP leadership race, according to her website .

A member of the We Wai Kai First Nation, Johnston has 14 years of experience as a social worker. She works as a regional manager for primary care with the First Nations Health Authority and founded the Maya'xala Culturally Centred Home Studies and Integrated Services, which provides culturally appropriate services to First Nations,
