Chicago residents are bracing for an influx of military patrols and immigration agents in the coming days.
Community leaders have been busy planning protests and advising residents about their rights.
Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker urged protesters to not make any trouble on Thursday.
"I will say that, again, part of their kind of nefarious plan is begin with ICE, cause mayhem on the ground, and by doing that, say that there's a need for military troops on the grounds, to protect ICEm" he said. "And so that's why I've talked a lot about, for the people who are going to protest, they've got to protest peacefully, not give them any reason to call in national guard military troops of other types."
Details of the operation were still scant Wednesday, but President Donald Trump has said an immigration crackdown and National Guard deployment were both in the works.
The preparations seem familiar in the Democratic stronghold that’s often been in Trump’s crosshairs.
Still, leaders of schools, churches and community groups, particularly in immigrant enclaves and Black and Latino neighborhoods, say there’s increased urgency and coordination in preparing for theexpected troop deployment and the deluge of attention that will accompany it.
