ATLANTA — Atlanta is mourning the loss of one of the city's first Black pediatricians, according to the city council.

Dr. Booker T. Poe died on Aug. 31. He was 89 years old. He was a beloved member of the Atlanta medical community for more than six decades.

Several city council members described Poe as a "passionate community advocate" who was a part of the Atlanta family.

“For over six decades, he served generations of families in Atlanta, becoming a cornerstone for health in the community and a voice for health equity and social justice across Atlanta and beyond. His guidance, advocacy, and love shaped our children’s lives in ways we’ll never forget,” said Atlanta City Council member Andrea Boone.
