CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) - The U.S. Constitution guarantees people accused of crimes the right to a speedy trial, but dozens of Charleston and Berkeley County inmates are spending years behind bars while waiting for their day in court.
Zarmell Polite and Marquell Myers, two men who were charged in the 2019 murder of 22-year-old Clifford Harrison Jr .
In the years that followed, the two were in and out of jail for months at a time and waited for their day in court.
“I know I’m innocent; I know I’m not supposed to be here; I know I got a life to live,” Polite said. “Your life is on hold, basically. It’s like you’ve got to stand still and no one can save you. No one can fix it.”
