A Portland City Councilor has lambasted six of his colleagues over their frequent use of a private text message thread , calling the group chats “a really stupid discussion for them to have.”

The rebuke by Councilor Steve Novick comes amid numerous allegations that he and the other councilors — Candace Avalos, Jamie Dunphy, Mitch Green, Sameer Kanal, Tiffany Koyama Lane and Angelita Morillo — broke Oregon’s public meeting law after the group potentially coordinated privately with Novick to strip $2 million in new funding earmarked for police and transfer it to parks maintenance during a budget vote this spring.
