The search for answers in a decades-old mystery led divers to a stunning discovery in the Chicago River this week.
A crew of divers from downstate Illinois were searching for a missing couple from the 1970s when they uncovered something else beneath the water’s surface. The search efforts, which had been ongoing for at least a week, saw divers come across nearly 100 cars in the river.
“Every time we've gone out to clear more vehicles through our diving, we have located more vehicles,” said Lindsay Bussick from Chaodivers.com.
The group is a sonar search and recovery dive team that travels across the country for missing persons "who are lost with their vehicle, potentially in the water."
As of Thursday afternoon, the group said it had discovered 97 vehicles, though it anticipates toppin
