The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners approved a ban on concealed carry guns in county public buildings Thursday.
Commissioners Julia Brim-Edwards and Shannon Singleton brought the proposal forward, acting on changes to Oregon law that now allow local jurisdictions to ban licensed concealed carry weapons from their buildings. The board unanimously approved the new restriction.
“We know that our buildings serve vulnerable populations, and the presence of firearms in public buildings, even when carried by individuals with a concealed handgun license, can contribute to a culture of fear,” Singleton said in a public meeting.
