WEST JORDAN, Utah (ABC4) — A motion filed by the Utah Attorney General's Office is asking that competency proceedings for Ralph Menzies be expedited. Menzies has been on death row for 39 years, and his execution was set to take place Sept. 5, 2025, before the Utah Supreme Court put a stay on it.

According to the motion filed by the AG's Office — which is prosecuting the case — yesterday, the court "can and should expedite Menzies' successive competency evaluation." The AG's Office argues that Utah State code sets a time limit for the competency review, but does not "limit the court's ability to expedite the competency process."
