NAVASOTA, Texas (KBTX) - Whether both teams want to admit it or not, the ‘Battle of Highway 90′ between Madisonville and Navasota has historically been a rivalry game.

The Mustangs and Rattlers used to be in the same district, but with Navasota now in Class 4A Division I and Madisonville in Class 4A Division II, the two squads don’t face off in district play anymore.

Friday at 7 p.m. at Rattler Stadium will be the fourth year in a row these two teams have met in pre-district play, renewing the rivalry. Two of those past three matchups went to overtime, with Madisonville holding a 2-1 edge.

“The old Navasota-Madisonville days, that goes back to before I was even here,” Madisonville head coach Russell Urbantke said. “So everybody really cares about this one. They circle it every year.”
