WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) - Family, friends and community members gathered Wednesday evening to remember Jackson Nzabonimpa. The 14-year-old was killed in a hit-and-run crash near Harry and Rock Road last month.
Just a year ago, Jackson and his family arrived in the U.S. as refugees from Congo in hopes of building a better life.
“I know it is a very difficult moment. As refugees, we’ve gone through a lot, but it will help in strength because of what we have gone through,” said Dede Shimiyimana, a translator for the Nzabonimpa family.
On August 13, Jackson had just finished his first day as a freshman at Southeast High School. He often visited a nearby gas station for snacks, but on that day, he never returned home.
