Former President Joe Biden recently had surgery to remove skin cancer lesions, according to a spokesperson. Kelly Scully confirmed that Biden underwent Mohs surgery, a procedure designed to eliminate cancerous tissue while preserving healthy skin. The surgery was performed after Biden was seen with a noticeable scar on his forehead while leaving church in Delaware.
This marks another health challenge for the former president. In 2023, Biden had a small skin lesion removed from his chest, which was later identified as basal cell carcinoma, the most common type of skin cancer. At that time, the White House physician stated that all cancerous tissue had been successfully removed.
Earlier this year, Biden's office disclosed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had metastasized to his bones. In a social media post, Biden reflected on the impact of cancer, stating, "Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places."
The Biden family has a history of dealing with cancer. Biden's son, Beau, passed away from a brain tumor, and his wife, Jill, has had two cancerous lesions removed in the past.
Mohs surgery is a precise technique where thin layers of skin are removed and examined for cancer cells. This process continues until no cancerous cells are detected. It is particularly effective for skin cancers that are likely to recur or have indistinct edges. The Skin Cancer Foundation recognizes Mohs surgery as the most effective treatment for basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma.
