A New Jersey mom is sharing her experience of being prevented from breastfeeding at a Union County department store to raise awareness about women’s rights to breastfeed.

Sahana Chowdhary was returning to her Scotch Plains home from Manhattan on Sunday afternoon when her 8-month-old daughter started to get fussy.

Chowdhary said she had to make some returns at The Mills at Jersey Gardens in Elizabeth anyway and figured “let me go to the mall and feed her in a fitting room.”

As her husband parked the car, she headed to the closest store with her 7-year-old son and infant. Chowdhary said the first place she saw was Cohoes department store, so she strode inside and headed to the fitting rooms, where she told an employee she wanted to go inside and feed her baby.
