MORGAN COUNTY, Tenn. — A new law is helping stay home bakers make a little extra dough.

"I just enjoy being in the kitchen. It's my favorite room in the house," Emma Massengale, who lives in Morgan County and said.

Massengale's passion for cooking led her to start Mamaw's Market Farm Stand back in April. She sells bread, vegetables and sweets.

"It helps a lot being able to bring in extra income, and still stay at home with my boys," said Massengale.

Emma is what as known as cottage baker. Cottage bakers usually operate a small, home-based business selling low-risk, non-potentially hazardous foods, like baked goods.

Legislaters passed a law in 2024 to add regulations for bakers in the state.
