A chemical in gel nail polish has been banned in Europe, prompting nail salons and customers to think twice about gel manicures.

Trimethylbenzoyl diphenylphosphine oxide, known as TPO, is an ingredient that makes wet gel polish harden under a UV light.

The European Union banned TPO on Sept. 1, meaning gel nail polishes with TPO can’t be sold or used by nail technicians in Europe.

At Tati Nails in Milford, all the gel products have TPO.

“We will order new products with TPO-free products," Tatiana Kutnyi , owner of Tati Nails, said. "We’re going to try them and see how it works. We want to provide the safest procedure for our clients.”
