Former Home Affairs boss Michael Pezzullo has claimed there are “eerie similarities” between China’s actions under President Xi Jinping and the rise of Nazi Germany.

The Chinese Communist Party held a major military parade on Wednesday, displaying state of the art military hardware in a choreographed show of force involving about 10,000 troops.

The parade was officially held to commemorate the end of WWII, but critics have described this as an excuse for President Xi to send a message to the world.

“This is really not about commemoration of history,” Mr Pezzullo told Sky News Australia.

“It was an exercise in projecting power, in seeking to intimidate those who might wish to stand in the way of what Chairman Xi describes the great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.”
