HAMPTON, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- A raccoon tested positive for rabies in the town of Hampton. The Washington County Department of Public Health is telling residents to protect their families and pets by avoiding contact with any wild or stray animals.

Officials said those who had exposure to the rabid raccoon are being treated.

Pets' rabies vaccinations should be kept up-to-date. A rabies vaccine clinic is being held on September 13 at the Washington County Municipal Complex. Registration is available online.

Another clinic is being held on October 4 in Cambridge and a third is scheduled for November 8 in Kingsbury.

All animal bites or exposures should be reported to the county public health department at (518) 749-2400.
