A memorial was unveiled on Thursday at the old Crownsville State Hospital to honor people who were buried in unmarked graves on the property.

At the top of a hill on the back of the property sit more than 1,700 unmarked graves of patients who died at the hospital.

Now, a marker sits at the bottom of the hill to honor them.

“Unspeakable injustices were carried out here, and together we say in one voice what happened in Crownsville can never happen again,” said Maryland first lady Dawn Moore.

The “Say My Name” memorial is inscribed with those previously nameless patients who died horrible deaths at the hands of those who worked at the hospital from 1912 to 1965.
