The head of the South Dakota Department of Corrections is stepping down from her post after state lawmakers called for her removal.

DOC Secretary Kellie Wasko is resigning effective Oct. 20 from her position, according to a letter South Dakota Gov. Larry Rhoden provided to the Argus Leader on Sept. 2.

In the letter, Wasko stated she made the decision after discussing it with her family "over the course of the last few months." She also indicated she would be seeking "other opportunities."

"This decision was not made lightly, and I am thankful for the incredible executive team that has been established and will remain committed to the Department of Corrections in my absence," Wasko wrote.
