SPARTANBURG, S.C. (WSPA) - The new Hands Free SC Law went into effect Monday, September 1, 2025, with the goal of reducing the number of collisions caused by distracted drivers on South Carolina roads.

The state's previous texting and driving law restricted drivers from using a mobile device to write, send, or read text messages while driving.

Now, more restrictions are in place to clearly define "hands-free" driving. Under the new law, drivers are not allowed to hold or support a mobile device, such as a cell phone, tablet, laptop, or computer, with any part of their body.

Drivers are also not allowed to use a mobile device to compose or read texts, emails, or information on apps and websites. Plus, watching media, including a video, movie, game, or video call while driving.
