Picture this: A man steals a jacket from a family-owned grocery store. Inside the jacket are a wallet and a key fob. Not long after, he returns to use the fob to steal a car parked outside the same store. The alarm sounds, and staff confront him; chaos ensues. Then that same man files a lawsuit against the grocer and his employees, claiming they assaulted him by stopping the theft. He admits to the crime, yet he is now asking a court to reward him with damages.

Why are we even entertaining this? Why are taxpayers, small business owners, and an overburdened court system being dragged into a case where the criminal himself says, in plain words, “yes, I did it”?
