Whitehorse council interrogated Yukon Energy on its plans for power generation sites within city limits.
At Sept. 2’s standing committee meeting, Yukon Energy’s vice president Michael Muller told council that the planned thermal generation sites — which would use liquefied natural gas or diesel — are needed to meet power demands in the Yukon.
The company is looking at 13 potential sites - 12 for the power generation centres, and one for an electric substation. The electric substation, according to the Yukon Environmental and Socio-economic Assessment Board (YESAB) proposal , would be located on Long Lake Road in Whitehorse.
Eleven of the sites are located within city limits, according to city staff.
