WINDER, Ga. — The mass shooting at Apalachee High School a year ago put a spotlight on school safety and gun access. Since then, one school safety bill has been passed, but efforts like requiring safe storage of guns have failed.

When House leaders got behind a bill to fortify the safety of schools from intruders and weapons, it got bipartisan support in the aftermath of the Apalachee shootings. The law, signed with fanfare by Gov. Brian Kemp, did nothing to restrict gun access.

"None of the gun safety bills I have sponsored in the past five years in the legislature have passed," noted state Rep. Michelle Au (D-Johns Creek).
